How It Happened
Rhode Island exploded late to beat St. Bonaventure 9-4 and win its fifth straight Atlantic 10 road game Sunday.
With the score tied 3-3 after five innings, the Rams (21-27-1, 11-11 A-10) put together its biggest rally of the season, scoring six runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Emily Power got things started with a one-out single before
Cassie Swenson and
Rachel Zingerman drew back-to-back walks. Pinch hitter
Caitlin O'Leary then reached on an error that allowed pinch runner
Mandi Hanewich and Swenson to score. Swenson and O'Leary both wound up in scoring position by the end of the play.
Pinch hitter
Annabeth Carlberg came through with a single through the left side to deliver both runners and make the lead 7-3. After a second out was recorded,
Skyler Rapuano had an RBI single to make it a five-run lead.
Becca Zawistowski later reached on an infield single to drive in Rapuano to cap the rally and give Rhody a 9-3 lead.
St. Bonaventure (11-31-1, 6-17 A-10) managed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all. URI freshman
Ashley Hibbard picked up her second win of the week with 3.2 innings of solid relief. She shut the Bonnies down and helped Rhode Island complete the three-game series sweep.
Inside the Box Score
- With the victory, Rhode Island has just about sealed its first postseason bid in 13 seasons, though that is not official. As long as Saint Joseph's does not make up Sunday's game against Dayton that was rained out, the Hawks are unable to catch URI. The Rams lead Saint Joseph's by 3.5 games in the league standings, with both schools having just three regularly-scheduled games remaining.
- By winning all three games at St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island ensured it will finish the regular season with a 12-12-1 record in true road games.
- Freshman Ashley Hibbard (3-2) earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief. She struck out five batters while scattering five hits and allowing just two unearned runs.
- Senior Cassie Swenson reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances. She tripled, doubled, singles, walked and scored three runs.
- Swenson had a monster series, batting .600 (6-for-10) with three runs scored and two RBI over three games.
- Senior Rachel Zingerman singled twice, walked twice and scored two times out of the leadoff spot.
- Freshman Hannah Hernandez singled twice, scored once and drove in one run.
- Freshman Annabeth Carlberg had a two-run single as a pinch hitter. Over the last two weeks, she is 3-for-6 with six runs batted in.
