How It Happened
No. 6 Rhode Island went toe to toe with No. 3 Dayton, but fell 4-1 in the opening round of the 2023 Atlantic 10 Championship Wednesday.
The Rams (22-30-1) jumped out early, getting a run off Dayton starter Haven Dwyer in the top of the first. With one out,
Rachel Zingerman lined a double to the gap in right center.
Elena Gonzalez and
Kylie Bulinski followed with back-to-back walks.
Skyler Rapuano hit into a fielder's choice that retired Zingerman at the plate, but
Jessica Hennelly delivered a single through the right side for an early 1-0 lead.
No. 3 Dayton (34-18) responded in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back infield singles from Emily Daniel and Emma Schutter. Maddie Kapsimalis lined a shot to center off the glove of
Hannah Hernandez that allowed Daniel to score. Kapsimalis passed Schutter on the bases and was called out, and Rhody starter
Ashley Hibbard struck out Nicolette Papavasiliou to end the eventful inning.
That was all the scoring until the sixth inning. Kara Gunter and Kapsimalis singled to start the inning before Papavasiliou walked to load the bases with no outs. Pinch hitter Katie Reeg laced a line drive up the middle that Hibbard snared for the first out. Chloe Wong lined a ball to right that allowed Gunter to tag and score. The throw got away, and pinch runner Maggie Grace scored as well. The Flyers got one more before the inning ended.
Rhody went quietly in order the seventh to end the contest.
