How it Happened
Though Rhode Island managed to take its first set from Brown since 2015, the team was unable to achieve victory and suffered a 3-1 defeat on Saturday evening. After dropping the opening two sets, Rhode Island claimed a 25-22 victory in the third to prolong the action before the Bears ended the night with a 25-19 win in the fourth frame.Â
Set One - Brown 25, Rhode Island 18
The opening set was closely contested and though the Rams started off in the hole, they eventually tied it up at the 8-8 mark when
Samantha Blahut provided a service ace. The teams continued to trade points down the stretch until Brown went on a 6-0 scoring run to go up 21-15. While the Rams were able to bring the deficit down to just four after a pair of kills from Blahut and
Andrea Owens, Brown successfully staved off any comeback.Â
Set Two - Brown 25, Rhode Island 11Â
The Bears were in control of the second set, putting up nine unanswered points early while jumping out to a 15-5 lead. Brown quickly worked its way to match point and though a
Madi Disu kill at 24-11 did delay the result, the visiting team put the set away once again.Â
Set Three - Rhode Island 25, Brown 22
The third set of the night went down to the wire before the Rams stunned the Bears with a victory. Neither team was able to maintain a comfortable lead, until the Bears went up 18-12 and forced a Rhode Island timeout. Rhody picked up two quick points out of the break and continued to chip away until a service ace by Blahut and a kill by Owens put Rhody on top, 22-21. A pair of Brown errors as well as a final kill by Owens allowed the Rams to pull off the upset. Â
Set Four - Brown 25, Rhode Island 19
Though Brown stayed out front through the start of the fourth set, the Rams did not allow them to lead by more than four points before a Disu kill and a block by both herself and Blahut put the Rams up 14-13. Facing its first deficit of the frame, Brown called a timeout. The teams traded points after the break, until four unanswered points for the Bears put them ahead 20-17 and forced Rhody to call a timeout of its own. Momentum continued to favor the visitors afterwards, as they propelled their way to the win.
