How It Happened

Despite a competitive match that featured 23 tie scores and 10 lead changes, Rhode Island (7-14, 2-6 Atlantic 10) ultimately fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) to George Mason (8-12, 3-5 Atlantic 10) at the Recreation Athletic Complex Friday night.

Set One – George Mason 25, Rhode Island 21

Despite an early 5-1 Rhode Island lead in the opening set, host George Mason capitalized on three Rhode Island hitting errors to tie the score and run away from there. Rhode Island did not see a lead change until the 17-14 mark when a 6-0 rally that featured kills from Sydney Houchens and Aerin Bowman with a Dakota Henry ace put the Rams up 20-17. The Patriots allowed just one more point off the block of Houchens and secured the set with a kill from Haley Graetz.

Set Two – George Mason 25, Rhode Island 22

In a highly-contested second set that featured nine tie scores and two lead changes, George Mason came out on top. Eight of the nine tie scores occurred from the 15-15 mark on, as the teams battled back-and-forth for the last 10 points. Madi Disu was the last Ram to score as she knocked in her fourth kill of the set at 22-22 before the Patriots cashed in on two Rhode Island errors and a kill from Olyvia Kennedy to clinch the set.

Set Three – George Mason 25, Rhode Island 20

The teams traded points early in the third set until a 7-1 Patriots surge at the 12-12 mark gave the home team the cushion they needed. A late 4-0 Rhode Island rally that featured a Madi Disu kill and a block from Chloe Abuto and Megan Disu brought the Rams within four at the 24-20 mark but that was as close as Rhode Island could get. George Mason's Camille Larkin and Ewelina Gacek added four kills a piece to carry the George Mason attack in the final set.
