FAU Hands Rhody 5-1 Loss in Owl Classic Opener

How It Happened
Florida Atlantic used timely offense – scoring four of its five runs with two outs – as it handed Rhode Island a 5-1 defeat Friday at the Owl Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

Rhode Island (1-6) scored the first run of the day when Cassie Swenson hit a triple down the rightfield line that allowed Leilyn Alvarez to score from first base. That was all the scoring on the day for the Rams.

Florida Atlantic (9-4) did not score its first run until the bottom of the fourth inning. Z Jones hit a one-out double, just the third hit of the game for the Owls. Cameryn Orland followed with a single up the middle that drove in pinch runner Abby Ota to tie the score.

Facing a second-and-third situation with one out in the bottom of the fifth, Rhody pitcher Avery Vale-Cruz (0-2) appeared on the verge of escaping. She induced an infield popup for the second out before getting the next batter to ground to third base. However, an error on the play allowed Kylie Hammonds to score the go-ahead run.

The Owls put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when Kamryn Jackson drilled a three-run home run to right that made the score 5-1.

Rhode Island managed to get a pair of runners on in the top of the seventh, but it was unable to get any runs across as the Rams lost their fourth straight game.
