How It Happened
Rhode Island (1-8) was unable to generate any scoring as it fell to Florida Gulf Coast 8-0 in five innings Saturday afternoon at the Owl Classic.
Florida Gulf Coast (9-7) struck quickly in the bottom of the first. McKenzie Wittenberg hit a two-run triple and eventually scored on a groundout by Nikki Gibson, giving FGSU a 3-0 lead. Two innings later, a five-run rally made the score 8-0, putting the mercy rule in play.
Rhody had its best chance to score in the top of the fourth inning.
Skyler Rapuano was hit by a pitch to start the inning and
Elena Gonzalez followed with an infield single to get the first two runners on. After a strikeout, a fielder's choice put runners on the corner. Pinch runner
Casey Miller was thrown out at second base, ending the threat.
