How It Happened
A six-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning sparked Rhode Island to a 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon. The game was halted in the bottom of the sixth due to the eight-run rule.
The Rams (4-18, 2-2 Atlantic 10) sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth, capitalizing on four walks and a hit batsmen to score six runs on just three hits.
Leilyn Alvarez was hit by a pitch to start things off.
Elena Gonzalez followed with a double to both in scoring position. Alvarez scored on a wild pitch to give Rhody its first lead of the day, 3-2. Three straight walks to
Kylie Bulinski,
Skyler Rapuano and
Cassie Swenson forced Gonzalez in with the second run. Back-to-back run-scoring singles by
Sydney Yoder and
Emily Power extended the lead to 6-2. A bases-loaded walk by
Hannah Hernandez scored Yoder, and Alvarez capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to drive in Power and make the score 8-2.
The big inning made a winner of
Katie Zaun (1-5), who provided a strong start. After St. Bonaventure (1-14, 0-4 A-10) got a two-run home run from Olivia Moon in the top of the first, Zaun was in shut down mode from there. She allowed just the two runs on three hits while working through the fifth inning.
Ashley Hibbard hurled one scoreless inning to close out the game and help Rhode Island get back to .500 in conference play.
