How It Happened
Saint Louis won in walk-off fashion for the second straight game to win the rubber match against Rhode Island, handing the Rams a 4-3 defeat Sunday afternoon.
Rhode Island (8-31, 5-10 Atlantic 10) had taken its first lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Trailing 2-0, the Rams put together a three-run rally.
Hannah Hernandez drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second base.
Casey Miller followed with an infield single that put runners on the corners.
Miller stole second to mover herself into scoring position, and a triple by
Elena Gonzalez brought Hernandez and Miller in to tie the game.
Kylie Bulinski followed with an RBI single up the middle to drive in Gonzalez and make it 3-2 for URI.
Avery Vale-Cruz set the Billikens (23-14, 11-4 A-10) down in order in the bottom of the sixth, leaving Rhody three outs away from taking the series.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, Kendall Johnson drew a leadoff walk, and
Liz Lynchard was summoned from the bullpen. Her first batter, Natalie Sullivan, also walked. Abby Ulsas hit a grounder to Lynchard, but a throwing error on the play meant all runners were safe. Pinch runner Jany scored to tie the game, and Sullivan and Ulsas both wound up in scoring position. Cami Newbanks followed with a line drive to center field that resulted in a walk-off sacrifice fly when Sullivan beat the throw home.
