Rams Drop Series Finale to GW, 3-1

How It Happened
Rhode Island (12-32, 7-11 Atlantic 10) was stymied by George Washington pitcher Sophia Torreso as the Rams fell in the series finale 3-1 Sunday.

Torreso (6-9) scattered six hits and one walk while throwing a complete game for the Revolutionaries (23-22, 9-11 A-10). She limited the Rams to just three runners in scoring position as Rhody struggled to string offense together.

GW scored quickly in the top of the first. Maggie Greco started the game with a single, and Allison Heffley followed with a sacrifice bunt that advanced Greco. Heffley was safe when the umpire ruled that second baseman Casey Miller was not on the bag when receiving the throw. Ashley Corpuz lofted a high fly ball to right that the wide carried away from Skyler Rapuano. Greco scored on the play, and the Revolutionaries wound up with runners on the corners. Alena Ramirez brought Heffley in with a groundout for a 2-0 lead.

Rhode Island got one run back in the second inning. Rapuano led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Emily Power then lofted a long fly ball to the wall in right center. Paige Hayward caught the ball with her back to the infield, with her momentum taking her into the wall. Rapuano tagged up and never broke stride around third base, beating the throw home for a run.

Hayward gave George Washington an insurance run in the top of the fifth with an RBI single that scored Greco.

Rhode Island managed to get the potential tying runs on base in the sixth inning, but it came up empty. The Rams got the tying run to the plate again in the seventh, but Torreso was able to escape unscathed, giving the visitors the finale.
