Rams Drop Series Finale at Dayton, 4-1

How It Happened
A late rally attempt came up short as Rhode Island dropped the series rubber game at Dayton 4-1 Sunday afternoon.

Dayton (28-18, 17-6 Atlantic 10) got strong pitching from Sarah Bailitz, Izzy Kemp and Haven Dwyer, who combined to limit the Rams (14-35, 9-14 A-10) to one run on four hits.

Bailitz started the game and struck out four batters over 2.0 scoreless innings. She allowed a single to Elena Gonzalez to lead off the game. Gonzalez was then thrown out stealing, and Bailitz retired five of the next six batters. She did allow a walk to Skyler Rapuano, but nothing came of it.

The Flyers got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the second. Katie Reeg was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After one out, Kaelene Walter walked and Emily Daniel reached on an infield single to load the bases. Emma Schutter brought pinch runner Norah O'Connell in with a sacrifice fly, and Walter scored on the next play when Kirnan Bailey singled and the ball was misplayed in the outfield.

Kemp (10-5) took over in the third and retired nine of the next 11 batters. The only blemishes were a fourth-inning walk to Casey Miller and a fifth-inning double by Sydney Yoder, but no scoring resulted from either.

Rhode Island nicked Kemp for a run in the top of the sixth. With one out, Miller worked her second walk of the day, and Cassie Swenson followed with a single. Following a flyout, Rapuano worked a walk to load the bases for Yoder, who singled up the middle to drive Miller in. Kemp ended the threat by striking out Zoe Rensel.

Haven Dwyer retired the Rams in order in the seventh to finish the game and earn her second save of the year.

Inside the Box Score
  • Massachusetts defeated George Washington 6-5 Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the series. As a result, the Minutewomen lead URI and GW by three games for the sixth and final spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
  • With all three teams having three games left in A-10 play, any win by UMass, loss by Rhode Island or game cancelation for either team in the final weekend would eliminate URI from contention.
  • Graduate student Sydney Yoder was 2-for-3 with a double, singled and one run batted in. She extended her hitting streak to six games, including back-to-back two-hit games.
  • Over her last six games, Yoder is 8-for-17 (.471) with one home run, one double, two runs scored and five RBI.
  • Graduate student Skyler Rapuano drew a pair of walks, moving her into a tie for 10 th place in program history with 57 for her career. Rapuano is tied with Ali Summers (57 from 2014-17).
  • Sophomore Casey Miller walked twice and scored the team's lone run.
  • Graduate students Cassie Swenson and Elena Gonzalez each singled once.
