How it Happened
Rhode Island won its second straight match to open the season despite playing a man down for nearly 75 minutes. The Rams defeated Quinnipiac 1-0 for its second shutout in a row Monday night.
Patrick Gryczewwski capitalized on a Quinnipiac turnover near midfield in the 11th minute. He carried the ball down the middle of the pitch and calmly fired a left-footed shot past Bobcat keeper Karl Netzell for a 1-0 Rhody leader.
URI was presented with adversity less than five minutes later when played was stopped following a scrum. After a lengthy discussion that delayed play more than 15 minutes, Rhody's
Keegan Walker was sent off with a red card, forcing the Rams to play with 10 the rest of the way.
Despite this, Rhode Island's back line did not allow a shot on goal for the entire first half. Quinnipiac began to exert pressure in the second half. At one point, the Bobcats managed to secure five corner kicks in less than 1:50, but the Rhody defense stood tall, not allowing any shots during the spurt.
Quinnipiac did manage six shots on goal throughout the second half, but URI keeper
Edu Rodriguez came up with several big stops. He had multiple diving saves, the finest of which may have been in the 76th minute. Filip Kangeman lined a low. Hard shot to the left of Rodriguez, who got down and just pushed the ball outside the post to prevent the goal and force a corner kick.
In the end, the Rams recorded their fifth consecutive shutout dating back to last season.
