How It Happened
After two sets of thrilling volleyball, host North Florida (1-0) took over in the third set and handed Rhode Island (0-2) a 3-0 (30-28, 25-23, 25-15) loss Friday night at the UNF Invitational.
Set One – North Florida 30, Rhode Island 28
Rhode Island fended off three set points and had two of its own in a thrilling opening set. A back-row kill by
Madi Disu put the Rams up 27-26, but North Florida tied the score with a Kierstyn McFall kill. Rhody responded with a
Karlee Pinell kill to set up a second set point, but the Ospreys ran off three straight points. McFall teamed with Annie Antall on a block before a bad set by URI made the score 29-28. A kill from Jaqueline Arrington closed the wild opener.
Set Two – North Florida 25, Rhode Island 23
The Rams appeared set to knot the match at one set apiece after a
Havyn Rolle kill gave URI a 23-20 lead. However, the host Ospreys ran off five consecutive points to close out the set. A Mya Sopato kill started the run, which also included an ace by Emma Pohlman. Jacqueline Arrington's kill ended the set and gave North Florida a commanding two-set lead.
Set Three – North Florida 25, Rhode Island 15
The final set was all North Florida, as URI seemed to run out of gas. A
Madi Disu kill made the score 14-12, but four straight points by the Ospreys opened a six-point lead. Rhody was unable to get within five the rest of the way, as North Florida took 11 of the final 14 points to complete the sweep.
