How it Happened
Rhode Island finished its competition at the Art Carmichael Invitation with a 3-0 loss to Stony Brook on Friday evening in Keaney Gymnasium. The Rams (4-6) put up a strong fight in the third set in an attempt to extend the match, but were unable to prevent the Seawolves' (7-1) sweep. With the result, Rhody finished the tournament 2-1.
Set One - Stony Brook 25, Rhode Island 16
The opening set was close to start, as the teams remained within three points of one another until a 13-9 Stony Brook lead forced the Rams to take a timeout. The Seawolves kept their foot on the gas coming out of the break, distancing themselves by as much as 21-10 before URI put up four straight points to get out of its slump. A pair of kills by
Karlee Pinell sparked the push, but the Rams were unable to get back in it.
Set Two - Stony Brook 25, Rhode Island 17
Stony Brook gained control quickly in the second set, using two different 4-0 runs to jump out 11-5. Rhode Island struggled to get its hitters going, notching just six of its 17 total points in the spread off of kills. URI did gain some momentum late and scored six of the set's final 10 points before Stony Brook's Kali Moore ended it with a kill.
Set Three - Stony Brook 25, Rhode Island 21
Rhody put up its strongest fight in the third set but it was not enough to prolong the action. The Rams had some momentum early, taking their biggest lead of the match at 8-4. Stony Brook called a timeout to try and stop the bleed, but
Karlee Pinell delivered a service ace out of the break to extend the advantage. Eventually, the visitors fought back with a pair of kills before an ace of their own had them up 11-10. The Seawolves added three more points before Rhody head coach
Ryan Sullivan called a timeout of his own. From there, Rhode Island chipped away until a 4-0- run capped off by an
Erika Bracey kill tied the set at 17 points apiece. Stony Brook outscored the Rams 7-4 down the stretch to reach match point before an Abby Campbell kill solidified the result.
