How it Happened
Rhode Island closed out its weekend road trip with a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 24-26) loss to Penn on Sunday afternoon.
Set One - Rhode Island 25, Penn 20
Havyn Rolle did it all for the Rams (5-8) in the opening set, recording five kills and a pair of service aces while assisting on a block. Rhode Island led by as much as 14-10 out of the gate before forcing Penn (6-3) to call a timeout. Though the Quakers did eventually trim the advantage down to just two points at 16-14, it was the closest they got down the stretch as the Rams scored five of the final seven points.
Set Two - Penn 25, Rhode Island 21
Penn had the momentum at the start of the second set, jumping out to 6-1. Facing a deficit, the Rams battled and fired off five-straight points, three of which came from Rolle kills, to tie the score at seven points apiece. That was the closest Rhody got as the Quakers regained control and stretched their edge to as many as eight points before taking the second set.
Set Three - Penn 25, Rhode Island 16
The third set was close at the start, with neither team able to establish more than a two-point lead until a service error and a pair of kills put the Quakers up 17-14. Penn picked up four more points before a Rolle kill stopped the streak. Unfortunately, Rhode Island was unable to stop the Quakers who reached 25 points with a service ace.
Set Four - Penn 26, Rhode Island 24
Rhode Island made a late push and nearly sent the match to five sets but was ultimately unable to prevent Penn from reaching victory. Though the Quakers led to start the action, Rhode Island hung in and managed to stay within striking distance of its hosts until a pair of URI errors and as many kills had the home team up, 13-8. Rhody picked up four of the next five points, sparked by a pair of kills from Vente, to trim the deficit down to just two at 14-12 before the Quakers pulled away once again. An attack error and a pair of kills from Rolle and
Andrea Owens kicked off a spurt that saw Rhody pick up seven of the final 11 points of the match. The Rams even managed to tie things up at 24-24 off a
Chloe Abuto kill, but the Quakers responded with two of their own to take the win.
