How it Happened
Rhode Island has its biggest scoring output in an Atlantic 10 match in nearly six years as it defeated Duquesne 6-1 Wednesday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
Five second-half goals salted the victory for Rhody, which won consecutive matches for the first time this season.
Tiago Barriguinha and
Mathias Taylor both scored twice to lead the Rams, who also got goals from
Sinan Bruning and
Kyler Vojvodic. The six goals were the most against an A-10 opponent since Rhode Island beat Davidson 7-3 on Nov. 9, 2019.
Visiting Duquesne held possession for most of the first half, but URI was opportunistic.
Everson Goglia earned a penalty kick for the Rams in the 34th minute when he was taken down in the box by Dukes' keeper Diego Chavez. Barriguinha buried the penalty for a 1-0 lead.
In the 57th minute, a
Kyler Vojvodic shot resulted in a handball in the box, which led to another penalty kick. Once again Barriguinha did the honors, scoring to put Rhody up 2-0. Just 51 seconds later,
Sinan Bruning scored off a pass from
Theo Harris to make it 3-0.
Mathias Taylor then scored twice in a span of just 31 seconds. In the 80th minute, a service from
Sebastian Berntsen was deflected by a Duquesne defender back to Taylor, who quickly fired a low shot past Chavez for a 4-0 lead. Moments later, Goglia split two defenders and won a race to a loose ball in the box. He settled and found Taylor, who lined a laser into the back of the next for another goal.
Vojvodic capped the night when he intercepted a bad back pass by the Duquesne defense. He touched the ball once to get around Chavez, then slid a left-footed shot across the goal line for the score.
