How It Happened
Rhode Island's season ended in gut-wrenching fashion, as an offsides call with 27 seconds to go negated a potential game-winning goal that would have sent the Rams to the postseason. Instead Rhody settled for a 1-1 tie with No. 22 Saint Louis Saturday night.
With the score tied 1-1 and less than a minute to go,
Tiago Barriguinha lofted a corner kick into the box. Sebastian Bertsen was able to head the ball to
Theo Harris, who then headed it past Saint Louis keeper Jeremi Abonnel. As Rhody celebrated, the linesman raised his flag, and a replay reviewed confirmed the offsides.
A victory would have moved URI into eighth place for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship. Thanks to a tie between La Salle and George Washington earlier in the evening, the Rams controlled their own fate.
Things looked good when in the 40th minute,
Mathias Taylor flicked a Rhody throw in ahead to
Sinan Bruning, who chipped the ball over a defender to himself. Bruning carried the ball into the box and fired a shot on target that was saved by Abonnel. Bruning was there for the rebound and put it away for the goal.
Saint Louis tied the score less than two minutes into the second half. Kai Jaeger sent a cross in front of the next to Tanner Anderson, who used his heel to clip the ball past Rhody keeper
William Synnestvedt for the equalizer.
Bruning nearly notched the game winner with just over 12 minutes to go. A nifty give-and-go between Bruning and
Theo Harris set up Bruning for a shot inside the box. However, Abonnel just got his foot on the shot to deflect it away and keep the match tied.
With less than four minutes remaining,
Tiago Barriguinha sent a corner kick into the box that
Brett Schwab was able to head on goal. Abonnel made the save to again thwart the effort. Moments later, Rhody had a free kick just beyond the top of the box, but the Saint Louis wall knocked the shot down.
