How it Happened
In a match fitting of a conference title, top-seeded Dayton won the Atlantic 10 Championship by edging No. 4 Rhode Island in a penalty kick shootout Sunday afternoon.

For a moment, the Rams appeared to have won. With Rhody leading the shootout 4-3 and Dayton down to its last shot, keeper Dani Eden made a diving stop on the shot by Laney Smith. However, it was ruled that Eden left the end line early, and a foul was called. Given a second chance, Smith scored to extend the shootout to individual shots.

After Rhode Island's Cierra Penny put her shot off the crossbar, Dayton's Riley Kerber stepped up. A senior transfer from Boston College who had never scored a collegiate goal, Kerber found the back of the net to end the match and give Dayton the title.

It was a dramatic end to a strong season for the Rhode Island nearly got the game-winner less than two minutes into the first overtime. Kyra Samalonis sent a cross to Kaia Rice to the far end of the box. Rice got a shot off, but keeper Batoul Reda made the save.

In the second overtime, Rhody keeper Dani Eden made the biggest play of the match. In the 108th minute, Dayton's Kyra Karfonta drilled a high left-footed shot that was heading under the crossbar. Eden fully extended and was able to knock the shot away, giving the Rams a chance to get to the shootout.

No. 1 Dayton came out with significant pressure early, swarming Rhody in every area. Though the Flyers had a 6-1 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, the URI defense was up to the task. Sarah Yee came on as a sub in the 18th minute and helped settle the backline down for the rest of the half.

The best chance for either side came in the 75th minute when Dayon's Caroline Schork got her right foot on a shot in the box. Her low shot when just wide for a Rhode Island goal kick. Lauren MacDonald got a shot on target for the Rams in the 79th minute, but it was right at Reda, who made the stop.
