How it Happened
Rhode Island blitzed Wagner in the opening minutes of the game and never looked back, defeating the Seahawks 72-36 Friday afternoon. It was the fourth straight win for the Rams, who are off to a 10-2 start for the first time in program history.
After both sides scored on their first two possessions, URI went on a 13-2 run that featured six straight points from
Ines Debroise. After a
Palmire Mbu layup, Debroise converted an old-fashioned three-point play before hitting a 3-pointer. An Mbu steal led to a
Vanessa Harris 3-pointer. A
Brooklyn Gray layup assisted by Harris pushed the lead to 17-6 and forced Wagner (3-7) to burn a timeout early.
URI carried a 21-12 lead into the second quarter, and then essentially put the game away by outscoring Wagner scoring the first 15 points of the second quarter. The defense allowed just 22 points combined over the first three quarters combined, building a 35-point lead going into the fourth period.
