How it Happened
One bad inning was the difference as Rhode Island lost 5-4 at St. Bonaventure, giving the host Bonnies a three-game series sweep Saturday.
Rhode Island (9-28, 3-14, Atlantic 10) broke through with two runs in the top of the second.
Noelle Sterner led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Julianne Torres.
Sydney Orndorff drove Sterner in with a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Orndorff came around on a double to the gap in left center by
Natalie Maleitzke, giving URI a 2-0 lead.
St. Bonaventure (8-29, 4-15 A-10) capitalized on three walks to gets its first run in the bottom of the fourth. Walks to Kendall Stull, Noplah Moyer and Kylie Bickert loaded the bases. With two outs, Abigail Ahern singled to left field to drive Stull in. Angelia Recrosio – who pinch ran for Moyer – was thrown out by Orndorff trying to score from second base.
An inning later, the Bonnies used a four-run rally to take their first lead. Sydney DeGram led off with a double that never left the infield. A soft pop between third and shortstop deflected off the glove of a diving Torres and deflected into foul territory. Karena Recrosio walked, and a double steal put both runners into scoring position. A Victoria Jacques single drove DeGram in to tie the score, and Recrosio scored on a wild pitch. Kymora Wang doubled Jacques in, and she later scored on a Moyer single, extending the lead to 5-2.
Rhody got one run back in the top of the sixth. Sterner reached on a one-out single and moved to third on a single by Torres. A throwing error allowed Torres to advance to second on the play. Orndorff chopped a groundout to first to bring Sterner in and move Torres to third, but another groundout ended the inning.
Rhody got the potential tying run on in the top of the seventh. Maleitzke led off with a single and moved to third on back-to-back groundouts.
Katie Knarr drove a single up the middle to make the score 5-4. However, St. Bonaventure pitcher Kendall Stull struck out
Emily Power on a 3-2 pitch to end the game and complete the three-game sweep.
