How it Happened
Rhode Island rallied to overcome a five-goal deficit and pick up another key Atlantic 10 victory, beating Duquesne 17-16 on the road Saturday afternoon.Â
The Rams fell into an early four-goal deficit after Duquesne scored three unanswered to build a 7-3 lead in the first quarter. In the first period alone, the host Dukes caused eight turnovers. Duquesne had an 8-4 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play.Â
Duquesne did not let up in the second quarter, scoring in the first minute to make it a five-goal game (9-4). The Rams went on a quick 3-0 spurt behind back-to-back goals from Brinley Myers and a man-down score from Caralie Basuel to cut the Duquesne lead to two (9-7). The Dukes halted the Rhody run with a score, and Myers answered again to keep the Rams within reach (10-8). But Duquesne rang off three straight goals within the final five minutes before the break for a 13-8 lead at half. Â
The third quarter was all Rhode Island. After being down by as many as five goals at halftime, the Rams continued to chip away at the Duquesne lead. Rhody allowed one goal in the third quarter while scoring six of its own to make the score 14-14 going into the final 15 minutes of play.Â
In the fourth quarter, it was back-and-forth as the teams went goal for goal to tie it again at 15. Basuel scored her seventh goal of the game for Rhody's first lead of the day at 16-15, but Duquesne would not go away and answered with an equalizer to keep it tied at 16.
Caitlin Dellecave scored the eventual game winner with 4:36 to play. Myers, who had a team-high eight points on the day, set her up with the assist as the Rams were able to rally back for their third straight Atlantic 10 win.Â
