KINGSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island women's basketball head coach Tammi Reiss announced the signing of three in-conference transfers, adding Brooklyn Gray (Saint Louis), Ta'Viyanna Habib (George Mason), and Valentina Ojeda (VCU). "I call these first three signees, 'The Big 3'" said Reiss. "I have seen all of them up close and personal for years now and have been thoroughly impressed by what each of them bring to their respective teams, their skill sets, their experience in our league and how they performed against our team. They understand our conference and have proven they can compete and get it done in the A-10."
Gray has spent the last two years at Saint Louis after spending the 2022-23 season at Wabash Valley College. Over the two seasons, Gray totaled 810 points and dropped a career-high 30 points in an Atlantic 10 Tournament game this past year. She had five 20+ point games last year with the Billikens, including a 22-point performance in the win against Rhody back on Feb. 26. "Brooklyn is that charismatic offensive player with an incredible scoring and passing skill set," said Reiss. "She has great size and strength that gives her the ability to score on the block with her back to the basket or on the perimeter with her face-up game. She has an incredible handle and can create her shot at any time. She loves the big moments and isn't scared of taking the big shots."
Gray helped lead SLU to its first-ever WNIT Championship title in 2023-24- a run that included a six-game winning streak. While at Wabash Valley College, she led the team to a 31-2 overall record, a Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC) regular-season title posting a 14-0 record and the Region 24 crown. "What I love most about Brooklyn is her ability to play make and pass," continued Reiss. "She can take a defensive rebound, start our break and go coast to coast for a score or make the right play and find an open teammate. She is a player that will be able to play all over the floor and in every position for us, I love her fire, flare and passion for the game. Brooklyn also has the dream to play professionally and is ready to improve her game."
Habib, a 2025 Atlantic 10 Champion, joins the Rams after spending the past two seasons at George Mason. During the Patriots historic season that concluded with a NCAA Tournament appearance, Habib shot over 40 percent from the floor (72-178). "Ta'Viyanna Habib is a great athlete with a strong body and good size and strength," said Reiss. "She gets out in transition and loves to play in a high-tempo system. Tavi is a skilled offensive player and a 3 level scorer. She has a silky smooth jumper off the catch or bounce and is an efficient 3-point shooter at 37%. She will really be able to stretch the floor for us and address the 3-point shooting and scoring woes we had this past season. She also brings a toughness on the boards and is a good offensive rebounder."
Like Gray, Habib is a JUCO product, spending two seasons at Indian River State College. In 2022-23, she earned Southern Conference First Team honors, and started all 30 games. She finished the season second on the team in scoring (13.8), rebounding (6.4) and steals (1.2). "Tavi brings Championship experience and also NCAA postseason experience to our team," added Reiss. "She knows how to play with great players and is very unselfish but I truly believe she is ready to have a break out offensive season. Tavi also has the dream of becoming a pro and aligns with our current culture."
Ojeda arrives in Kingston after spending the last two years at VCU. This past season, she matched her career-high 21 points twice, shooting over 80 percent from the floor on both occasions. Ojeda worked her way into the starting lineup by conference play and posted four straight double-digit scoring efforts."Valentina is a smart, versatile player that can score in a multitude of ways," said Reiss. "What I love about her the most is her offensive prowess and efficiency. She is a skilled offensive player that can pass, dribble and shoot. She is a 50% shooter from the floor and 37% from the three. She will be able to stretch the floor for us and add a much needed 3-point threat."
Another JUCO product, Ojeda spent two seasons at Independence Community College. After averaging 19.4 points per game shooting 41.9 percent from the floor in 2022-23, she was named to the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference First Team. Overall, she played in 62 games for Indy with 61 starts in her two seasons. Ojeda has also represented her home country of Chile on the senior Chilean National Team. "I have also watched Valentina play 3x3 for her Chilean team over the past few summers and appreciate her IQ and understanding of how to play and make the right play," added Reiss. "Valentina really excites me because she will bring great leadership and a competitive fire to cut down nets and get to the NCAA tournament. She also aligns with our culture of player development and living in the gym to improve her skill set and reach her dream of becoming a professional player."
The trio looks to make an immediate impact to a squad that finished 17-16 a year ago, with the season falling short at the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals. "Rhody Nation needs to be excited about these three experienced, skilled, savvy players," finished Reiss. "All three have contributed to beating us at one time or another… Now Rhody Nation gets to cheer for them and show them the love they deserve! Couldn't be any happier to have them join our Ram family and have the ability to coach them and make their last year something special. Let's Go! Go Rhody!"
