How it Happened
Rhode Island took down Fordham in a back-and-forth thriller on a soaked Sunday evening in the Bronx.
Fordham got off on the right foot, with early chances that pushed back the Rhode Island defense. In the fifth minute, the Rams sent a long throw-in into the box that Rhody was unable to clear the wet ball, and Sam Delgado made them pay when he fired a left-footed shot inside the near post to open up the scoring.
Just two and a half minutes later, Rhody responded when
Connor Froberg sent a long throw-in to the box that
Collin Martin helped on to
Liam Kuemmritz, who touched the ball into the path of
Lean Husterer, who scooped it into the far corner of the Fordham net to level the match 1-1.
Fordham pressed the issue in the 28
th minute when Marc-Alexandre Happi Emaga took a bouncing ball and tried to flick it by Rhody keeper
William Synnestvedt, but he got big all the way out on the edge of the 18-yard box. Happi Emaga had another great chance when he sent a header from a corner kick on goal, but Synnestvedt denied him once again.
In the 68
th minute, Rhody earned a penalty kick when
Maksim Kalina was taken down from behind in the 18-yard box.
Tiago Barriguinha stepped up and buried the kick past Leo Perelman to give the Rams a 2-1 lead.
Fordham wouldn't let the lead last long either as Nico Linares struck a half-volley with power past Synnestvedt to get things back to all square in the 70
th minute. One minute and 26 seconds later, Barriguinha sent a free-kick curler into the box that found the head of
Maksim Kalina, who bounced the ball past Perelman to get Rhody in front.
The craziness continued as Sam Delgado fired a shot off the back of
Collin Martin to tie things back up just two minutes and 31 seconds later. Rhody answered right back eighteen seconds later when Kalina scored his second goal of the night on a beautiful slip pass from
Sinan Bruning, to give Rhody the lead for the third time.
Fordham pushed for a tying goal in the final few minutes of the match, but the Rhody defense held on, with Synnestvedt making a few more saves to cap off a 10-save night.
