Rams Drop Two Against St. Bonaventure

How It Happened
Rhode Island struggled with timely hitting as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon. The Rams (3-8, 0-5 Atlantic 10) fell 5-1 and 7-3 while going 2-18 with runners in scoring position over the two games.

Game 1 - St. Bonaventure 5, Rhode Island 1
The Rams led 1-0 after three innings in the opener thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Becca Zawistowski that drove in Rayah Snyder.

After getting just one hit through its first three turns at bat, the Bonnies scored four times on three hits, one walk, a hit batsman and an error in the top of the fourth. Sydney DeGram singled to start the rally, Nolah Meyer walked and Lauren Dundon was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.

Kendall Stull lofted a sacrifice fly to left that brought DeGram in to tie the score. When the ball was dropped in the outfield, the bases remained loaded. Kymora Wang followed with a sacrifice fly of her own that allowed all three runers to advance. Run scoring singles by Grace Miller and Abigail Ahern capped the rally.

Stull (1-3) handled the rest in the circle for St. Bonaventure. She scattered four hits and two walks while pitching a complete game for her first win of the season.

Game 2 – St. Bonaventure 7, Rhode Island 3
Abigail Ahern hit a pair of home runs and Lauren Dundon added a solo shot of her own to power St. Bonaventure in the second game.

The Bonnies scored in five of the first six innings, steadily adding to its run total. Dundon had a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Ahern drilled a two-run homer in the fourth inning, Dundon hit a solo shot in the fifth and Ahern hit a second two-run blast in the sixth to highlight the attack.

Inside the Box Scores
  • Rayah Snyder had two hits and one run scored in each game. She doubled, had three singles and walked once on the day.
  • The big day raised her season batting average to .333.
  • Brooke Fairbanks singled three times and walked once in the twin bill.
  • She scored two of the three URI runs in Game Two.
  • Fairbanks is batting .474 (9-for-19) and has a team-high .522 on-base percentage.
  • Becca Zawistowski drove in three of Rhode Island's four runs on the day. In addition to a sacrifice fly in the opener, she was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk i the second game.
  • Julianne Torres delivered three singles and a sacrifice fly over the two games.
  • In the second game, she missed a home run by just a couple feet, as the ball went off the wall in left.
  • Meg McNally, Giuliana Ialongo and Natalie Maleitzke each singled in the second game.
  • Brooke Gerry was excellent in relief in the opener, pitching 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run. She had six strikeouts with no walks.
  • Rhody left 18 runners on base, including 12 in the second game.
  • Due to snow still on the URI Softball Complex field, the doubleheader was played on Providence College's Glay Field.

Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure finish the series with a single game Sunday at 12 p.m. The game again will be played at Providence College's Glay Field.
