How It Happened
Rhode Island (21-26, 9-15 Atlantic 10) capped the 2026 season with a 3-2 victory over George Mason on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the Patriots and finishing the year on a four-game winning streak.

Rhody jumped out quickly, scoring twice in the first inning. Hannah Hernandez led off with an infield single and scored when Brooke Fairbanks followed with a triple to right field. Kylie Bulinski brought Fairbanks in with a sacrifice fly, making the score 2-0.

George Mason (26-25, 10-14 A-10) got one run back in the top of the second on a run-scoring single by Madi Sabota. However, URI starter Brooke Gerry (4-11) kept the Patriot offense in check for most of the day, allowing just six hits, five of which were singles. Gerry struck out a career-high 13 batters, fanning at least one batter in every inning.

In the fifth inning, singles by Becca Zawistowski and Julianne Torres put runners on first and second for Rhode Island. Rayah Snyder lined a single through the right side to drive in pinch runner Meg McNally for a key insurance run that made the score 3-1.

A two-out double by Alyssa Hopkins drove in Tess Altevers Harris for George Mason in the top of the sixth. However, Gerry struck out Meghan Gray to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, Madi Sabota drew a leadoff walk to put the potential tying run on base. After a flyout, Gerry struck out Payton Auerbach to get Rhody one out away from the win. Logan Pickford singled to move Sabota into scoring position. Gerry then struck out Kamryn Inman to end the game and secure the victory.
