How it Happened
The Rams scored three first-half goals and fought off a La Salle comeback in a dominating 3-2 conference road win Sunday afternoon. It's URI's second straight Atlantic 10 victory. 

Claire O'Neill opened the scoring for Rhode Island in the seventh minute. The Rams drew a corner kick and two touches from Kyra Samalonis and Lauren MacDonald set up a shot by O'Neill that found the back of the net for her first career goal. Nika Jacobs added to the lead 16 minutes later after a shot by Megan Steinbach was deflected by La Salle keeper Samantha Widnick and corralled by Jacobs who scored for her team-high third goal of the season.

Rhody added on with its third goal of the first half after a score from Molly Merkel. Merkel scored her first collegiate goal after beating keeper Widnick with a shot to the lower right corner. Rhody went into the break with a 3-0 lead. 

After halftime, La Salle got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute. Brianna Lewis sent the ball up to Shiloh Moore who found herself 1v1 with URI keeper Dani Eden. Moore beat Eden with a shot in the bottom right of the net to make it 3-1. 

The Explorers made it a one score game after Alexis Garcia scored with less than 15 minutes left on the game clock. Moore had a cross to Garcia who took a shot from the top of the box out of Eden's reach.

Less than a minute later, defender Natalie White was issued a red card and the Rams were forced to finish the game with 10 players. Despite being down, Rhody was able to fight off the battle back by La Salle. Eden made a save in the final 10 minutes of the game to escape with the win and hand the Explorers their first A10 loss. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Both Claire O'Neill and Molly Merkel scored their first collegiate goals in the match.
  • Nika Jacobs scored her third goal of the season, a team high.
  • It's the second straight game Rhody has scored three goals after not having a multi-goal match through the first nine games of the year. 
  • La Salle outshot the Rams 17-9, including a 12-3 advantage in the second half.
  • Lauren MacDonald had a game-high three shots.
  • Goalkeeper Dani Eden made five saves.
