University of Rhode Island

Kayse Kiernan: InSite Engineering, LLC

I'm excited to share my experience as a summer intern at InSite Engineering, LLC, a private engineering firm in Monmouth County. I was fortunate to have been accepted back in March as a paid summer intern at this highly reputable engineering, surveying and planning firm from May through August.

My name is Kayse, I'm a rising sophomore at the University of Rhode Island in the College of Engineering and member of the Division I Women's Lacrosse team. As a student-athlete at URI, I was able to stand out during the application process among other summer interns applying for the same position. I was not quite sure how I was going to balance a summer internship, two URI academic classes, summer workouts, and prioritizing family time as well. After spending my freshman year at URI under  my coaches Jenna Slowey and Riley Smith I learned valuable time management skills allowing me to complete each task allotted while succeeding in all fields. Their support on and off the field was the foundation of my first successful year and blueprint of my first summer intern experience.

This summer, I worked with a team of engineers, project managers, design engineering, and draft persons in residential, commercial and industrial markets. Surveying is the basis of every land development construction document. More specifically, I would take land and structural surveys and import all the necessary numbers into a computer software program called AutoCAD. It is a software program used by engineers in order to produce 2D drawings. I had to be accurate and timely because surveys are critical to the success of each project.

Some of the projects I worked on this summer include a guest/pool house as well as additions to houses and even building commercial buildings. My favorite tasks were  an addition to an ice cream shop as well as a renovated front patio. The most challenging aspect of the job was the variety of the projects and learning to balance more than one at a time effectively. While at InSite, I worked a structured nine to five day and a total of thirty-two hours a week.

While there were some challenging aspects, the University of Rhode Island has prepared me for success. The University hosts a career fair throughout the year and although I didn't take a job from any of them, it still provides useful insight into what companies are looking for as well as serving as a resource to help with the interview process of what a job is like. At InSite, I was valued as a member of their team and helped support the company's mission of excellence in professional engineering. This experience has helped me further my aspiration to become a Civil Engineer from the University of Rhode Island and I can't wait for continuing lacrosse this coming fall. GO RHODY!
