Oct. 13, 2000

KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Shannon Kittelson scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Rhode Island defeated George Washington 5-2, in an Atlantic 10 matchup at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday evening. With the win, the Rams tied a school record for wins in a season with 12. The Rams also won 12 games in 1984, 1998 and 1999.

Rhode Island got on the board first when sophomore Heather Kasparek took a cross in front of the box from senior Mary Drapetis (Lincoln, R.I.) and slipped the ball past GWU keeper Christine O'Malley for a 1-0 lead at the 17:10 mark. The Rams scored their second goal of the game when Kittelson took the ball at midfield, started a breakaway and fed the ball to Drapetis who connected with Kasparek for a 2-0 advantage at the 19:34 mark.

George Washington responded immediately as junior Erin Coppedge put in a pass from sophomore Kim Warner to make the score 2-1 at the 24:35 mark. The Colonials tied the game at the 24:35 mark when Coppedge tallied her second goal of the game on a pass inside the box from junior Angelica Caramanica. With time winding down in the first half, Kittelson stole the ball in the Colonials side of the field and took a breakaway for an unassisted goal at the 43:28 mark and a 3-2 lead for URI heading into halftime. The goal proved to be the game-winner.

Kittelson notched her second goal of the game on a rebound at the 67:20 mark for a 4-2 lead. The Rams closed out the scoring for the contest when senior Laura Seymour headed in a corner from freshman Erica Young at the 89:51 mark for the 5-2 victory.

Sophomore Jamie Epperlein made four saves in goal in the Rhode Island victory while freshman Christine O'Malley made four stops in the setback for George Washington.

The Rams improved their record to 12-1-1 for the season with a 4-1-1 mark in the Atlantic 10 while George Washington fell to 4-10 with a 3-2 mark in conference play. URI will return to action on Sunday, October 15 when they travel to Providence for a non-conference matchup with Brown at 1:00 p.m.
