KINGSTON, R.I. -
Sophomore Heather Kasparek scored a pair of goals as Rhode Island defeated Fordham 2-0 in an Atlantic 10 match at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Rams clinched a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship to be held at Xavier next weekend.
Rhode Island got on the board first when Kasparek took a cross from senior Mary Drapetis inside the box and slipped the ball past the Fordham keeper, freshman Shannon Misiaszek, at the 17:23 mark. After outshooting Fordham by an 11-2 margin, URI took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
At the 82:47 mark of the second half, Drapetis found a streaking Kasparek on the left side of the field and connected with her for the second goal of the game, giving the Rams the 2-0 victory.
Sophomore Jamie Epperlein made three saves in goal for Rhode Island while Misiaszek made seven stops for Fordham.
The Rams finished the regular season with a 15-3-1 record and a 6-3-1 mark in the Atlantic 10 while Fordham falls to 6-11-2 with a 2-7-1 mark in conference play. URI will return to action on Friday, November 3 when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for the Atlantic 10 Championship.
