Junior Catherine Zanni scored the game-winning goal and added a pair of assists as Rhode Island defeated St. Joseph's 5-2 in an Atlantic 10 mathcup at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Rhode Island took an early lead when Zanni had a long cross to sophomore Gina Rosen who slipped past the defenders and gave the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 3:16 mark. St. Joseph's responded when junior Kim Dwyer took a throw in from senior Julia Delaney and slid the ball past the keeper to even the score at 1-1 at the 11:17 mark. The Rams took a 2-1 lead at the 17:28 mark when sophomore Rebecca Sorensen sccored her first career gals as she headed in a corner kick from Zanni. Zanni closed out the scoring in the first half, putting in a pass from senior Stephanie Boisvert at the 42:20 mark to give URI a 3-1 lead at halftime.

St. Joseph's made the score 3-2 when freshman Michelle Ford put in a rebound at the 54:43 mark. That would be as close as the Hawks would get, however, as sophomore Heather Kasparek notched an unassisted goal at the 76:17 mark to go up 4-2. Shannon Kittelson added the final goal of the afternoon at the 82:58 mark for URI's 5-2 victory.

Sophomore Jamie Epperlein made seven saves in goal in the Rhode Island victory while sophomore Christy Ganc had four stops in the setback for St. Joseph's.

The Rams improved their record to 11-1-1 for the season with a 3-1-1 mark in the Atlantic 10 while St. Joseph's fell to 3-8 for the year with an 0-4 mark in conference play. URI will return to action on Friday, October 13 when they host George Washington at 7:00 p.m.
