Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Epperlein made eight saves for Rhode Island to lead the Rams to a 3-0 victory over Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 conference opener for both teams at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. It was the first time in school history that the Rams have beaten the Minutewomen.
With the win, Rhode Island improves to 6-0 and 1-0 in conference play while UMass falls to 3-4 with an 0-1 record in the Atlantic 10.
URI senior Mary Drapetis (Lincoln, R.I.) opened the scoring when she put in a pass from junior Catherine Zanni at the 6:02 mark to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. Rhode Island would add to their lead later in the first half as senior Stephanie Boisvert (North Scituate, R.I.) put in a corner kick from Zanni to make the score 2-0. URI closed out the scoring when junior Shannon Kittleson took a cross from sophomore Gina Rosen to put the Rams ahead 3-0.
Rhode Island returns to action on Wednesday, September 20th when they host Yale in a non-conference matchup at the URI Soccer Complex at 7:30 p.m.
