KINGSTON, R.I. -
Junior forward Shannon Kittleson scored two goals in a span of 19 seconds early in the second half to lift Rhode Island past Holy Cross, 3-1, in a non-conference match tonight at the URI Soccer Complex.
The Rams (2-0) have won their home opener in four of the last five years.
Junior midfielder Catherine Zanni got URI on the board when she scored on a direct kick in the 30th minute. Sophomore sweeper Brandy Ault tallied the Crusaders' lone goal of the night off a feed from junior midfielder Kate O'Shaughnessy in the 34th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
Kittleson broke the tie early in the second half, converting a pass from senior midfielder Stephanie Boisvert to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage. Kittleson added an insurance goal just :19 later to extend the lead to 3-1. She nearly completed the hat trick in the 76th minute, but her penalty kick hit the post.
