The University of Rhode Island posted an impressive 4-0 shutout victory against James Madison in the URI Comfort Suites Invitational at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday evening.
Rhode Island jumped out to an early lead when senior Sarah Johnston blasted in a shot at the top of the box off an assist from fellow senior Erica Young to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 23:42 mark. The Rams took a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Rams extended their lead to 2-0 when senior Sarah McCalligett capitalized on a miscue by the James Madison goalie at the 50:23 mark. URI struck again at the 59:38 mark when Johnston scored her second goal of the evening on a rebounded miss of a shot from sophomore Megan Kasparek to extend their lead to 3-0. Rhode Island was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box and Young converted the penalty kick to give the Rams the 4-0 lead at the 69:28 mark.
Rhode Island sophomore Kirsten Marra made two stops in the shutout while Jessica Hussey made six stops in the loss for the Dukes.
URI, 1-0 for the season, will return to action on Sunday, August 31st when they host Northeastern at 2:00 p.m. while James Madison (0-1) will take on St. John's in the URI Comfort Suite Invitational at 12:00 p.m.
