Women's Soccer Falls To Furman, 5-4 In Double Overtime

Greenville, S.C. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 5-4 double-overtime decision against against host Furman at the Select Kickoff Classic, Presented by Land Rover at the Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina on Friday evening.

Rhode Island opened the scoring for the evening when senior Sarah Johnston took a pass from sophomore Melanie Kasparek and put in her fourth goal of the year to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 11:47 mark. Furman responded quickly, however, as Emily Turgeon connected on a pass from Kate Johnson and notched her fourth goal of the year to knot the game at 1-1 at the 15:49 mark. The Rams regained the advantage at the 29:31 mark when Johnston notched her second goal of the evening, an unassisted tally to give URI the 2-1 lead. Rhode Island extended its advantage to 3-1 on an unassisted goal from senior Erica Young at the 36:28 mark. Furman would close out the half strongly, however, when Denielle Petro put in a pass from Kelly Shedd to make the score 3-2 at the 42:41 mark. With under a minute left to go in the first half, Kat Kelly notched a goal for the Palladins to tie the game at 3-3 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the two teams battled back and forth evenly before Rhode Island took a 4-3 lead on an unassisted goal from Melanie Kasparek at the 74:01 mark. Furman responded quickly, however, and tied the game for the second time on an unassisted goal from Andre'a Morrison at the 78:58 mark. Despite several scoring from both teams down the stretch, regulation ended with a 4-4 tie.

After a scoreless 10 minutes in the first overtime period, the two teams headed to a five-minute second overtime. At the 107:50 mark of the second overtime, Furman was awarded a corner and Erin Sanders played a ball into the box where Kat Kelly put in her second goal of the evening to give the Palladins the 5-4 victory.

Freshman Melissa Bargione made four stops for Rhode Island while Andie Hinshaw made one stop for Furman.

With the loss, Rhode Island falls to 2-2 while Furman improves to 3-3 with the victory. The Rams will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 14th when they take on Clemson in the Furman Select Kickoff Classic at 12:30 p.m.
