The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision against Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 contest on Friday evening at the URI Soccer Complex.
Rhode Island opened the scoring for the evening when senior Sarah McCalligett started a breakaway down the right side of the field and crossed the ball to fellow senior Sarah Johnston who slipped the ball past the UMass keeper to give the Rams a 1-0 lead just :59 seconds into the contest. Massachusetts answered at the 22:45 mark when sophomore Adair Blyer headed in off a cross from senior Maggie LaBrode to knot the game at 1-1. The two teams headed into the locker room tied at one goal apiece.
At the 66:27 mark in the second half, Massachusetts was awarded a penalty kick after a Rhode Island foul in the box. Sophomore Lindsey Bellini converted the penalty kick to give the Minutewomen the 2-1 lead. UMass extended their lead to 3-1 when junior Lindsey Fairweather stole the ball from a Rhode Island defender and slipped an unassisted goal into the lower right corner of the net at the 77:30 mark. Massachusetts closed out the scoring for the evening when Bellini put a corner kick into the box where freshman Stephanie Barrett headed it in to give the Minutewomen the 4-1 lead at the 79:13 mark.
Freshman Melissa Bargione made one save in the setback for Rhode Island while Kelly Nigh had seven stops for UMass in the victory.
With the loss, Rhode Island falls to 2-1, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10 while Massachusetts improves to 2-0, 1-0 in conference play. The Rams will return to action on Friday, September 12th when they travel to Furman for a contest with the Palladins at 7:30 p.m.
