SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Maurice Maxwell's 3-pointer with 25.6 seconds
to play broke a 62-62 tie and lifted Massachusetts to a 67-63 win over Rhode
Island (13-8, 2-5) on Saturday.
The win was the third straight for Massachusetts (8-11, 3-5) and its first
road win of the year. Art Bowers led Massachusetts with 18 points and Rashaun
Freeman added 13. Maxwell, Anthony Anderson and Jeff Viggiano all scored 12
points.
Rhode Island missed four free throws in the final 41 seconds, while Anderson
hit all four of his free throw attempts in the final 1:26 of play.
Anderson made a pair at 1:26 to put the Minutemen in front 62-61. Rhode
Island tied the game on Brian Woodward's foul shot with 41.6 seconds left tied
the game at 62-62.
After Maxwell made the 3-pointer to put UMass ahead 65-62, Woodward was
fouled on a 3-point attempt with 12.8 seconds to play. Woodward, an 85 percent
foul shooter, made the first free throw, but missed the next two.
Anderson then made a pair of foul shots with 6.8 seconds left to put the
game away.
Dustin Hellenga hit a jumper as time expired in the first half to give Rhode
Island a 30-29 halftime lead. Hellenga added 12 points for the Rams.
After being out-rebounded 22-10 in the first half, Massachusetts held a
21-14 edge on the boards in the second.
