Women's Soccer Edged By Dayton 1-0 In Overtime Of Atlantic 10 Championship Game

The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to 20th-ranked Dayton with 1:25 left in the first overtime period as the Flyers clinched their fifth Atlantic 10 title.

Ram goalkeeper Ria Carroll (Warwick, R.I.) played an amazing game making key saves for the Rams and posted an Atlantic 10 Championship record 12 saves.

In the first half, Rhode Island put pressure on the Flyers less than five minutes into the game when Melanie Kasparek's (Trumbull, Conn.) goal attempt went wide to the right side of the goal.

Rhode Island would have another chance to put the ball in the net in the second half as sophomore Lauren Forgione (Southington, Conn.) got a hold of a breakaway ball with 34 minutes left to play in regulation but Stacy Deluca was able to make the save.

With 30 minutes to play, senior co-captain Claire Landon (Bedford, N.H.) got the ball inside the box on a cross from Forgione but Deluca was able to prevent the goal.

The game was forced into overtime play and with 1:25 left to play in the first overtime period Tesia Kozlowski headed home a corner kick to give Dayton the sudden victory win.

Carroll, Melanie Kasparek, defender Molly Bergren and freshman defender Sarah Helldoerfer were all named to the 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference All-Championship team for their outstanding play throughout the tournament.

The Rams finish the season 11-9-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the Atlantic 10.
