The women's soccer team suffered a tough 6-0 loss to Santa Clara on Sunday in its second game in the Rutgers University Tournament (0-2).
The Broncos scored all six of their goals in the first half with Micaela Esquivel striking first, knocking in a deflection in the 17th minute. Bree Horvath scored on a through ball from Tiffany Roberts in the 21st minute, followed seven minutes later by a Megan Kakadelas shot that squirted high through the Rhode Island goalkeeper Kirsten Marra's (Wallingford, Conn.) hands. Meghan Snell made the score 4-0 in the 34th minute when her corner kick bent around the near post, deflecting off the keeper's hands. Tina Estrada then scored a pair of goals in a four-minute span, converting Brittany Klein's through ball in the 40th minute, then heading Cat Sigler's free kick inside the far post in the 44th minute.
Alyssa Sobolik did not have to make a save in goal for the Broncos. For Rhode Island, Kirsten Marra had one stop in the first half and Ria Carroll had three saves in the second half.
Santa Clara was picked 12th by the NSCAA and eighth by Soccerbuzz in this week's Top 25 Polls. The Broncos were picked fourth by the NSCAA and second by Soccerbuzz in the West Region Polls. Rhode Island was picked 13th in this week's Soccerbuzz Northeast Region Poll.
The Rams will be back in action on Friday, September 17th at home when they take on A-10 rival Massachusetts. The game begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on COX-3.
