The Rhode Island women's soccer team shutout James Madison 2-0 in Monday's second round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational Women's Soccer Tournament.
Rhode Island (2-2-0) won its second game of the tournament behind second-half goals from freshman Thorunn Helga Jonsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland and junior Melanie Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.). Jonsdottir sent a lofted ball from near midfield and it sailed just over the reach of JMU junior goalkeeper Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario/Holy Trinity) and into the goal just 2:27 into the second half. Kasparek received a pass from sophomore Aimee Lambert (Fairport, N.Y.) near midfield, sprinted toward the goal and beat Hussey in a one-on-one with a shot from 23 yards out in the 75th minute.
Rams' junior goalkeeper Ria Carroll (Warwick, R.I.) made three saves to get the shutout as Rhode Island handed JMU (3-1-0) its first loss in four games.
Rhodys' Kelly McTurk (Niantic, Conn.), Claire Landon (Bedford, N.H.), Thorunn Helga Jonsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Megan Kasparek (Trumbull, Conn.) were also named to the All-Tournament team.
The Rams will be back in action at 5:30 p.m on September 10 when they take on Michigan State in the Rutgers University Tournament.
