RICHMOND, Va. - Rhode Island sophomore forward Debra Nelson scored the lone goal in the Rams double overtime, 1-1, tie at Richmond in conference soccer action Friday. The tie secures URI a second place seeding or higher for the conference tournament, which begins Nov. 3 in Dayton.
Both Rhode Island (10-4-1, 6-0-1 A-10) and Richmond (4-9-4, 2-4-2 A-10) served-up 14-shots, with the Spiders having an 11-2 corner advantage.
Rhody senior goalkeeper Ria Carroll had seven saves through 110 minutes between the post.
"Ria did a great job of keeping us in the game tonight," said head coach Zac Shaw. "She is why the game ended in a tie."
After a scoreless first half, Nelson put the Rams up, 1-0, at the 59:59 mark with her sixth goal of the season.
In the 88th minute of the game Richmond's Annette Isham slipped the ball past Carroll, knotting up the score and sending the Rams into overtime for the second time this season.
The Rams will play their final game of the regular season at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 30) at Charlotte.
