Women's Soccer Shuts Out George Washington, 2-0

Oct. 1, 2006

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's soccer team recorded its sixth victory of the season with a 2-0 blanking of George Washington on a rainy October 1 at the URI Soccer Complex. Sophomore Dora Larusdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) scored both goals for Rhody, while freshman Amanda Thomas (State College, Pa.) picked up her second-consecutive shutout. With the win, the Rams remain perfect at home this season, as well as in conference play.

After much back and forth play throughout the first half, it appeared as though GW would score first when Kris Guynn had a look at a wide open net, but sent her shot just over the crossbar at 29:33. Rhody went on to keep the Colonials off the board, thanks in part to a solid defensive effort that limited GW to just three shots.

Larusdottir got things started in the second half when she sent a pass from graduate Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 Rhode Island lead. Fifteen minutes later, Larusdottir struck again, this time controlling a cross from freshman Kassandra Spitler (Montoursville, Pa.) and blasting a shot past GW's Amie Kern. The insurance goal was the final tally of the game, as URI went on to record its third win of the week with a 2-0 win over the Colonials.

In all, Rhode Island outshot George Washington by a 12-6 margin and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Thomas made a total of four saves in net for the Rams, while Kern made five stops for GW.

Rhode Island (6-6-0) returns to action on Friday, October 6, when it hosts Xavier (5-6-0) at the URI Soccer Complex at 7:00 p.m.
