MIAMI, Fla. - Rhode Island outfielders Christine Gentile and Stefanie Poedubicky along with first baseman Courtney Wall were named to the Blue and Gold Felsberg Memorial All-Tournament team Sunday, as the Rams fell 6-5 to tournament host Florida International in the championship game.
Poedubicky and Wall combined to score all five runs for URI against the Golden Panthers. Sophomore Jill Anderson recorded the loss for the Rams pitching 5.1 innings giving up six hits for four runs with one strike out.
Rhode Island jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Poedubicky scored the first run of the game on a wild throw from FIU's second baseman. Wall scored run number two on a single down the right field line from Jamie Plamondon (Providence, R.I.).
Florida International answered with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game 2-2. URI regained the lead, 3-2, when Wall hit a double to left center driving in Poedubicky from second.
In the top of the sixth the Golden Panthers scored three runs to take a two run lead, which they would not relinquish, and added a run in the seventh to give them a three run advantage heading into the last frame.
The Rams tried to rally back adding two runs in the bottom of the seventh including a home run from Wall scoring Poedubicky who had singled to right center. URI's effort was ended by Florida International's Sarah Belanger who recorded her second win of the season with 11 strike outs on the day.
Rhode Island went 2-3 for the tournament led by Poedubicky with eight runs. Wall added four runs including her home run against FIU and drove in a team high five for the Rams.
