How It Happened
Rhode Island (11-18) overcame an early four-run deficit to rally and knock off in-state rival Bryant 10-8 Wednesday afternoon.
Bryant (13-17) struck for three runs in the top of the first, using two singles, two walks, two hit batsmen and an error to piece together a rally. Rhody responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, as
Becca Zawistowski drew a bases-loaded walk and
Sydney Orndorff had a sacrifice fly to pull URI within 3-2.
In the second inning, Carly Genzer drilled a three-run home run after the URI defense made a pair of errors that extended the top half of the frame. Rhody found itself down 6-2, with four of the six runs being unearned. The Rams got one run back thanks to three walks and a wild pitch that allowed
Riley Frickleton to score for the second time in as many innings.
A triple play by the Rhode Island defense provided the momentum shift the Rams needed. With runners on first and second following a pair of walks, second baseman
Casey Miller fielded a grounder off the bat of Teagan Thompson. Miller flipped to shortstop
Julianne Torres for the first out, who fired to first for the second out. First baseman
Katie Knarr took the throw and immediately fired home to catcher
Kylie Bulinski, who tagged out Gabriella Gesualdo, who was trying to score from second on the play.
With the team energized, Frickleton led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. She scored her third run when
Kylie Bulinski laced a double to the gap in right center. With one out, Orndorff tripled down the right field line to bring Bulinski in. Orndorff then scored on a wild pitch to pull the Rams even at 6-6.
In the bottom of the fifth, Rhody took its first lead. After Frickleton reached on a fielder's choice, Bulinski lined her fourth home run of the season to right, making the score 8-6. Bryant came right back with two of its own in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back walks to start the inning, Gesualdo singled up the middle to drive in Laniya Lewis from second. A walk to Bryce Clendenin loaded the bases, and after one out, Carley Genzer walked to force Arianna Williams in to tie the game again. Pitcher
Brooke Gerry managed to get out of the jam without further damage.
In the home half of the sixth, Torres reached on a fielder's choice and got herself into scoring position with a steal. A
Casey Miller single put runners on the corners before
Hannah Hernandez used a groundout to drive in Torres with the eventual winning run. Later in the inning, Bulinski singled Miller home for an insurance run.
The Bulldogs had one last gasp, as pinch hitter Alana Garcia singled to start the seventh. However, Gerry retired the next three batters to end the game and secure the win.
