Women's Soccer Defeated At Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, at Providence on Wednesday, August 30. Junior Thorunn Jonsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) scored the Rams' only goal off a direct kick in the second half.

After much back and forth play, Providence opened up the scoring at the 28:24 mark when Nicole Benko tapped a set piece to Christie Gent who sent the ball past a wall of URI defenders and into the net to put PC up 1-0.

Rhody evened up the score at the 66:55 mark when Jonsdottir blasted a free kick past PC goalkeeper Laura Elfers and into the upper right corner of the net. The Friars regained the lead with what proved to be the game winner at 84:09 when Gent fed a corner kick into the front of the net where Megan Mancarella headed the ball past URI's Danielle van Vierssen.

The Rams (1-1-0) return to action on Friday, September 1, when they travel to Seattle, Wash. where they will face Washington at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time.
