Women's Soccer Falls to #8 Portland, 8-0

SEATTLE, WASH. - The Rhode Island Women's soccer team was shutout, 8-0, by defending national champion No. 8 Portland on Sunday, September 3. URI freshman goalkeeper Danielle van Vierssen (East Greenwich, R.I.) recorded a career-high eight saves in the loss.

The Pilots jumped out to a quick lead on goals by Natalie Budge, Kendra Chandhoke and Megan Rapinoe, all within the game's first ten minutes. Rhody was able to keep Portland off the board through the remainder of the first half, but Portland came back from the break on a tear, scoring its first of five more goals just six minutes in.

In all, Portland's Budge scored three goals while Chandhoke had a goal and three assists. Rapinoe netted two and notched an assist, while Michelle Enyeart and Elsa Hume rounded out the Pilot's scoring with one goal each. Katie Brown and Angie Moznuk also had one assist each for the defending national champs.

The Rams (1-3) return to action on Friday, September 8 when they face Wisconsin-Milwaukee (3-1) in the first round of the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
