Baseball Takes On Connecticut, This Afternoon At 3:00 p.m.

RHODE ISLAND (11-24 OVERALL / 7-8 ATLANTIC 10): The Rams return to Bill Beck Field for the second day in a row after yesterday's doubleheader with Sacred Heart. In the first game, senior Scott Brown went 2-for-3 with two RBI and sophomore Oliver Palmer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Rams cruised to a 9-3 win. Freshman Nick Greenwood recorded his first collegiate victory in five-and-two-thirds innings while senior Eric Larson recorded a homerun, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. In game two, senior Gregg Allen, freshman Fernando Robles, and Larson each scored to give Rhody a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, but Sacred Heart clawed back into the game and tied things up with three runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth before the game was called, 6-3 in favor of Sacred Heart, due to darkness. The Rams enter today's contest in sixth place in the Atlantic 10 with a 7-8 conference record. Charlotte and Richmond currently sit atop the A-10 standings, each with a 13-2 conference mark. To date, URI has been out-hit (367-320) and outscored (247-197) by its opponents while averaging 9.14 hits and 5.54 runs per game. The Rams also have combined for a .960 fielding percentage while turning 26 double plays this season.

 

OFFENSIVE LEADERS: #30 Eric Larson, #33 Ryan Cunningham, #17 Zach Zaneski, #29 Scott Brown. Larson enters today's contest with a team-best .629 slugging percentage, a .347 batting average and a .423 on-base percentage. The Rhody designated hitter also leads URI with 43 hits, 29 runs, eight homeruns and two triples and is second on the team with ten stolen bases. Cunningham enters today's contest with a .310 batting average, 40 hits, 25 RBI, 14 doubles and 305 put-outs. The Rhody first baseman, who leads the team with 13 multiple-hit and nine multiple RBI games, earned the A-10 Player of the Week award on Feb. 26 and was named to the College Baseball Foundation's National Honor Roll the following day. Zaneski has played in 34-of-35 games for URI and has 199 put-outs (second on team) and 33 hits (third on team). The Rhody catcher has a .303 batting average and a .431 on-base percentage. Brown enters today's game with 32 hits, 17 runs, 14 RBI, three stolen bases and two homeruns. The Rhody right fielder boasts a perfect fielding percentage with 58 put-outs and five assists.

CONNECTICUT (20-20 OVERALL / 5-10 BIG EAST): Today's contest against Rhode Island marks the Huskies' sixth game in as many days. UConn was blanked Fairfield, 8-0, yesterday afternoon after recording an 8-5 win over Siena on Monday. Against the Stags, senior starting pitcher Brendan McGinn hurled six scoreless innings to win his sixth consecutive decision while Harold Brantley was 3-for-4 with two runs and Peter Fatse and Larry Day each chipped in two hits. In Monday's game against the Saints, Brantley went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI while Dennis Donovan was 2-for-4 and Dale Brannon had two hits, two RBI and two runs. To date, UConn has been out-hit (379-367) and outscored (232-201) by its opponents while averaging 9.19 hits and 5.03 runs per game. The Huskies also have combined for a .857 fielding percentage while turning 48 double plays this season.

 

HUSKIES vs. RAMS: Today's game marks the 149th meeting between Rhode Island and Connecticut. The Huskies hold a 96-49-3 advantage in the all-time series after defeating the Rams, 4-1, earlier this season (April 11) in Storrs, Conn. In that game, the Rams combined for a season-low three hits - two of which were credited to freshman Oliver Palmer. Senior Dan Tucker Had the Rams' only other hit.

 

OFFENSIVE LEADERS: #3 Dale Brannon, #27 Larry Day, #9 Dennis Donovan, #10 Peter Fatse, #2 Pat Mahoney, #13 Matt Untiet. Donovan leads the team with a .337 batting average with a team leading 27 RBI and 56 hits and is tied for second on the team with nine doubles.  Fatse leads the team with a .433 on-base percentage and a .444 slugging percentage, is tied for second with nine doubles and is third on the team with a .306 batting average.  Untiet leads the Huskies with 10 doubles and is third on the team with 20 RBI.
