KINGSTON, R.I. - After missing the last 34 games with an injury, junior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) returned to the Rhode Island lineup and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to help the Rams complete a three-game sweep of George Washington with a 6-2 victory over the Colonials on Senior Day at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, R.I. Senior pitcher Adam Perkins (Hudson, N.H.) gave up just one hit and one run in six innings of work to earn his 22nd career victory and tie him with Dan Frederick (2002-05) and Steve Holmes (2004-06) for the top spot on Rhode Island's career wins list.
George Washington (17-30-1 / 9-12 Atlantic 10) got on the board early as Mickey Shupin doubled to left field with just one out in the top op the first, stole third and then scored on Michael Parker's infield ground-out.
Senior Dave Savard (Nashua, N.H.) evened the score for URI in the bottom of the inning, leading off with a walk and advancing to second on classmate Scott Brown's (Portland, Maine) ground-out to second, before stealing third and crossing the plate on a wild pitch by GW's Ryan LaPointe.
Perkins struck out the side to start the second and the Rams kept the offense rolling in their half of the inning. Junior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) led off with a single through the right side and advanced to third on O'Malley's right-field single. Sophomore Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.) then plated both Zaneski and O'Malley with a two-run triple to deep right before making the score 4-0 on Savard's ground-out to second.
Rhody scored its final runs in the bottom of the fourth when O'Malley, who doubled to left to start the inning, reached home on a Savard single before Savard made his way around the bases to score URI's sixth run on an infield ground-out by senior Gregg Allen (Dighton, Mass.)
The Colonials got one back in the top of the eight, off of redshirt freshman reliever Tim Boyce (Swansea, Mass.), but that was as close as they would get as junior closer Jamie Degidio (Narragansett, R.I.) finished things off for the Rams in the top of the ninth to extend Rhody's win streak to eight games. The Rams have now recorded back-to-back Atlantic 10 weekend series sweeps of Xavier and GW to boost their record to 19-24 overall and 13-8 in the Atlantic 10.
URI will return to action next weekend, with a three-game series at Fordham, beginning Friday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m.
