COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 25 Marquette in the second game of the Colorado College Invitational this afternoon. With the loss, URI falls to 3-2-1 overall on the season.

A combination of injury and illness took a toll on the Rams. Two of the team's top scorers - Deb Nelson and Dora Larusdottir - did not play (sick), while Jessica Babice and Adrienne Ruhe Lischke both suffered injuries during the match.

"We were a shell of our team today, due to the virus going through our roster." head coach Zac Shaw said. "Marquette is a good team and I was proud of the way our team fought for all 90 minutes. I only wish we were at 100%."

The Golden Eagles tallied the first score of the match in the fourth minute and added a second tally in the 30th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, Rhode Island was able to find the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed. Kaylen Shimoda was able get a shot past MU goalkeeper Laura Boyer, but the officials indicated she was offsides. On the ensuing possession, Marquette was able to convert its third score of the match.

"That was really the turning point in the match." Shaw explained. "Instead of it being 2-1 early in the second half, momentum shifted right back to their side after they scored right after the offsides call."

MU added a late goal for the 4-0 outcome. For the game, URI was outshot 23-3. The Rams attempted three corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Fede made 10 saves in goal in 90:00 of action for Rhode Island.

URI returns to action on Friday, Sept. 21 when it hosts New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m.
