TROY, Ala. - A two-run shot by senior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) scored the Rams' only two runs as the Rhode Island baseball team fell to Troy, 9-2, Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy, Ala. The Trojans' Ryan Ellison earned the win in the season-opener for both teams while senior reliever Jamie Degidio (Narragansett, R.I.) was charged with the loss after giving up five earned runs in the seventh inning.
Rhody (0-1) opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Zaneski homered over the left field fence, also driving in sophomore Zoey Angulo (Miami, Fla.), who led off with single to center field.
Troy (1-0) cut the Rams' lead in half in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice by Brock Kelley that scored Beau Brooks after an error at second by sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.). The Trojans went on to plate six more runs in the seventh inning and used a two-run eighth to put the game out of reach for Rhode Island.
Senior Brett Palanski (Nashua, N.H.) struck out three batters and gave up one run in five-and-two-thirds innings on the mound while Angulo had two hits (one double) and Palmer was 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base.
The Rams return to Troy for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
