Rams Shut Out at Troy, 9-0

TROY, Ala. - Freshman Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with four put-outs in right field as the Rhode Island baseball team was shut out by Troy, 9-0, in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy, Ala.

The Trojans (2-0) went up 1-0 in the first inning on a Daryl Otwell single up the middle that plated Bryan Miller. Troy built on its lead with a five-run fourth inning and added two more in the seventh before Lance Miller crushed a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 9-0 victory.

Tim Wheeler earned the win for the Trojans, allowing just four hits in six innings on the mound. Freshman Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) with three strikeouts and three walks in five innings of action.

Senior Shaun Hagey (Ephrta, Pa.), junior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.) and freshman Tom Coulombe (Lincoln, R.I.) were the only other Rams to reach base on hits for Rhode Island, which drops to 0-2 on the season.
