Softball Opens Season With 6-2 Loss to Loyola Marymount

ST. GEORGE, UTAH - The University of Rhode Island softball team suffered a 6-2 loss to Loyola Marymount in its season-opener Friday afternoon at the Red Desert Classic.

Sophomore Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.) launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for the Rams - the only URI hit of the afternoon. The round-tripper marked the first of her career.

The Lions (2-0) raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Chelsie Tysdal and a throwing error which allowed Christine Foley to score. They stretched the lead to 3-0 in the second when Kirsten Slouber scored on a second throwing error by the Rams.

Loyola Marymount tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth on a leadoff home run by J.J. Hartung and a sac fly by Darcy Pagnini which stretched the lead to 5-0. Slouber poked a single to center field in the seventh to plate another run and cap the LMU scoring.

Melissa Dykena picked up the win for Loyola Marymount as she walked three and struck out 16. Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) threw a compete game for the Rams (0-1), allowing 11 hits and six runs (four earned) while walking five and striking out four.

The Rams return to action Friday afternoon when they face Utah at 4 p.m. MT.
